When faced with the prospect of dealing with our issues, many of us tend to look for solutions that address the problem as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, this often leads us to address symptoms only, rather than dealing with the underlying challenges or wounds or traumas that led to the symptoms in the first place. This is a completely understandable approach—after all, revisiting old wounds can seem frightening, and may even be painful. What to do?

The real problem here is that, when we address symptoms only, we often find ourselves relying on religion or spirituality to heal our wounds—this is the essence of a situation known as a Spiritual Bypass. Unfortunately, such approaches generally don’t work, at least in the long run. Sure, they may provide temporary relief, but sooner or later we have to address our core issues—at least if we want to achieve true fulfillment in our lives.
